Go right ahead

If IQ's were batting averages, I'd be a pitcher.

no, they aren't telling the kids. the parents are getting into the scores and comparing them amongst themselves....
i.e......oh, well my little johnnie has an IQ of 135 and he didn't make the program??? your little suzie has an IQ of 120 and did??? let's go to the principal with this, shall we?????
IQs are tossed around in parental conversation only as far as i know. my daughter has no clue what hers is and neither do i, howEVER i feel pressured to jump on the numbers bandwagon and put hers up on a placard in front of the school.
Stevie has an IQ of 150 -- how does that compare to your little Einstein??? BITE ME. BITE US. GET A LIFE.
think it would fly?

You're pretty smart, Steve. Being smart is one of those things that is evident in your actions as well as your words.

gifted kids rarely rise to the heights that they are capable of, and when it comes to success the average kids do just as well if not better than those identified as gifted. |
I am a prime example of that one! Straight A honor roll student that didn't go to college. At 25 I took a years worth of classes and was relieved to find that school still came easy. I was working on an Associates in Drafting (still have to finish a year ). I might get to it again. someday
The kids that I thought were all brain dead probably make twice my salary down at the Chrysler plant. [/quote]
Same here. Even though we had no so-called gifted program I scored very high on all the standardized testing of that day (Iowa Basic Skill Tests). I slogged thru 1-12 with a B avg because I could do it w/o studying and little homework. Every single report card I ever got had the same verbage on it - he's an underachiever, if he applied himself he'd get straight A's, yada yada. Dropped out after 1.5 yrs of college with the same B avg because I just hated school. I've got a good job, make a good salary and don't regret it one bit.

I was in the gifted programs all through school as well, and from 3rd through 6th grade was put in a different school to be in a gifted class.
Even as a 2nd grader I could see it was dumb... I did get more advanced reading and math assignments that I needed, but I don't see why those can't be given in the context of a normal class to those kids who really need them, rather than restructuring the hierarchy of giftedness to include all those smarter than the lowest common denominator.

it (the gifted programs) create almost an arrogance among in them
about 1/2 of the people in grade school that greg and i knew were in the program ended up not even going to college or dropping out...many got involved in the bad crowds and thought school was not cool anymore
we chugged along and worked hard and graduated ahead of them
they may have been intelligent but they did not use that intelligence
you can never discount hard work
think about all the people who have talent for something but do not use it...

Really? Some of the worlds most notorious psychopaths are also intelligent; Ted Kaczynski, Ted Bundy, Ira Einhorn, just to name a few.
