I'm at a loss - no idea what to get for my Nan. She has her own apartment and leads a lively lifestyle for a woman in her upper 80s. Thoughts/suggestions?

About when my grandparents turn 78-80 they started in on the "I have too much stuff, don't give me STUFF" thing... I'm trying to think of what I gave them though and I'm drawing blanks. I think I used to give them annual school pictures in the size of frame they had for me (so they could update the old one, etc) And food. Its disposable, so its not really stuff that would clutter...

My grandma just turned ninety and recently moved into an assisted living facility. She has limited space, so I was at a loss as to what to get her. I decided to get her a pair of gloves. They're nice, leather Isotoners, in a jaunty pink color. She'll be able to use them and it's not something that's going to take up too much space.

Having an 86 year old mom has its moments but some gift ideas:

Stamps lots of stamps - mom writes a lot of cards and letters. Stationery to go with the stamps. How about a gift card to a local supermarket ?

General personal hygene products like soap, shampoo, toothpaste.

Some of the gifts that were given to my grandma when she was about that old...

1. handmade flannel pajamas... corny but she loved them because I made them
2. paid her cable for a year
3. we, too, did the yearly pictures of those in school
4. gift certificate to the beauty parlor that she went to every single week, she got her hair "done"

Beer

OK, kidding...How about,.... Wine.

I know, I know. Just teasing. An older person doeesn't need either of those, they should have...hard liquor...

Alright, seriously. Clothes? Shoes? A membership to a museum or something? A Year long Bingo pass?

Grandmothers get their hair done every week and Sahara's gift certificate to that salon is a splendid idea.

They're also always in need of a pretty nightgown, matching bathrobe, and slippers.

The beauty salon gift certificate is a good idea. What about a few massages at a local salon? Or, since she is still active and independent, what about lessons for something she's always wanted to learn (gourmet cooking school, wine tasting, etc)?

This may sound corny, but what about a year's worth of free car washes/oil changes? Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. I'm trying to figure out what to get my grandmother/parents as well.

Last year I gave my grandma a prepaid phone calling card. She was a bit scared of it at first, but once she figured it out she loved it. Now she recharges it herself and only uses it for phone calls. It saves her money and still allows her to talk to people she loves without killing her limited budget.
