is frustrating me tonight. Short story long...what would it take to put Windows XP on ghetto laptop? Would it work? Is ghetto laptop too old? How can I tell? and most importantly, can I somehow use the XP on my desktop (ie, avoid buying XP?)

Okay laptop is ghetto, and operator is ignoramus. :oop: Its a refurbed IBM thinkpad...if I were to guess it looks similar to my dad's thinkpad he got circa 1998. If you tell me how to figure out, I can look up and tell you memory and such. But I slept in the day we learned that crap in computer science 101. Embarassed

I do think I magically just got this dlink ethernet thing to take in my card port thing, (it has no ethernet port) which frees up my ONE usb port for me to use my jump drive which actually makes my life significantly easier. But...in my warped mind XP would make my computer behave better, that is the operating system that is infact ghetto, not the computer (lack of ports, etc on old laptop excluded)

On your desktop, you can right-click on the My Computer icon and select "Properties". That'll usually tell you all you need to know.

Ghetto laptop is in timeout right now, it gave me lip (blue screen of death), so I sent her to the corner. Let me start the 5 minute boot up process and I'll get back to you.

System: Microsoft Windows Me 4.90.3000

Computer: GenuineIntel Pentium II processor 192.0MB RAM

System Resources 44% free
File system: 32 bit
Virtual Memory: 32 bit
Disk Compression: not installed
PC Cards (PCMCIA): 32 bit

okay...now. Could I use XP on this mess and if so, would it possibly imrove things and any other suggestions (besides bagging this whole plan altogether, I'm a poor poor student)

You could, but I wouldn't recommend it.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx

PLUS, a license for XP runs about $200.

Unless you are a student at a school with a Microsoft Agreement. Then it's <$10. Smile That's how I got Visual Studio.NET for <$20. I also got IBM WebSphere for $3.

From what I hear, ME sucks big time.

Something that might help you tremendously is to add more memory.

Windows CE + Windows ME + Windows NT = Windows CEMENT

Coincidence? I think not.

I would check out overstock.com for a new one.

Yeah, they have cheap laptops, but I'm a fulltime student, who also has a fully functioning desktop. I can hold out with the blue screen of death and ghetto laptop for class in lieu of spending more.... Neutral Thanks though.

I would NOT stick Windows XP on that system. Give me an hour or two to unpack my training manual from my WIndows XP classes, but I do believe that the system requirements on your laptop might barely meet, or not meet what is necessary for that O/S.

What you need, per MS:

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

CD-ROM or DVD drive

Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

* Actual requirements will vary based on your system configuration and the applications and features you choose to install. Additional available hard disk space may be required if you are installing over a network.

Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information to find the summary of your system. It may be somewhat different on ME, but I would think it would still be in Acessories somewhere.

Sounds like you're going to want to upgrade to a better machine. You can get a true ghetto laptop today from almost anyone for $400 -- won't be high powered or have lots of bells and whistles, but would have XP already and probably be more functional than what you currently have.
