ok ewe emgiminerrs out there

I can get 89 octane gas with 10% ethanol or 87 octane gas with no ethanol.

What is interesting is I pretty consistantly get 27 mpg with the 87 octane no alcohol and 25 mpg with the 89 octane. Also my little 4 chipmunk power truck 'feels' like it runs better with the 87 octane fuel. Does this make sense?

I'm no engineer, but beings that this is ethanol country (more plants springing up every year)...ethanol does tend to burn faster, which is why you get less mpg, with the lower octane stuff.

dunno That's what I was told by someone.

Kind of. Ethanol contains less energy per gallon than does gasoline, therefore you need to burn more of it to get the same result. The difference is pretty much negligible, though. The cleaner burn is worth it, in my opinion. The octane rating doesn't really have anything to do with how well your car performs - it's a compression ratio thing. If your engine knocks, the amount of compression is causing the gasoline to ignite prematurely. The higher octanes can handle more compression.
