Does anyone know personally someone affected by Katrina? I would rather give personally than go through an 'organization'.

You can't drive a block here right now without seeing a LA or MS license plate. I have one friend who evacuated from Tulane U, a know a LOT of people who have family and or friends who are affected/evacuated/missing/staying with them, most of those people don't have any idea what they have if anything to come home to. Everyone I know has insurance. Its the ones who are still there who were too poor to leave who need the most help now, and those people would probably be best helped at this point from an organization like the Red Cross. But I don't know.

American Red Cross is always a good organization. We talked this afternoon and will be sending them a donation.
I hope we'll be hearing from the Hollywood community about donations. They seemed to do a good job with the tsunami relief effort, it would be great to see the money used closer to home.

I know several people, but probably none that really need the assistance. Obviously everyone from the area will need help, but the people I know are financially stable and living with family in other areas. I think that to get the money to those that truly need help, the only way is an organization.

I don't know anyone in those areas.
The Assembly of God church organization has a truck line called the Convoy of Hope. They bring food and water to disaster and hunger stricken areas.
You can make an online donation, over the phone or mail it in. Here is their website for current news about what they are doing for those affected by Katrina.
http://www.convoyofhope.org/news.asp
I don't think the website has been updated since Monday afternoon when the first truck arrived in the area.
