Though, if you really, really, REALLY wanted to split hairs, she could be charged with tampering with the license plates by placing the colon on them - JOHN3:16. But that would be about all.

Is that illegal?

or offensive?

I think it's illegal in Illinois. But it's one of those laws that exist in name only.

I would think its a state by state thing anyway, its varying state laws that say you should have a front license plate. Here nor there.

You could advocate violence like this: KILL-ALL.

But seriously, I don't see the issue here at all.

I don't have any problem with what people put on their license plates. Believe me - I've seen it all! I personally don't like vanity plates. I think they are about as tasteless as bumper stickers but that is just me.

This particular plate just annoys me a little from a Christian perspective because I hate when people make reference to scriptures (vanity plates or elsewhere) and others don't even know what it means. FYI: John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Try to fit THAT on a plate and I'd be okay with this particular one. Very Happy

I see your point, Dives. But I think she does that (and it seems you could never see an NFL game on TV and not see that guy with the rainbow Afro wig holding up the sign with "JOHN 3:16" on it) so that people will ask her "What does that mean?" It's a conversation starter. At least she'd better know that!

License plates are not government property, so there shouldn't be a connection between church and state. If license plates are transferred with used vehicles, they are part of the car that is personal property.

Freedom of Religion. Freedom of Speech.

I have no problem with people declaring their faith. I have a problem with them declaring their faith as the only faith and using Christianity as a facade.

I was under the impression that they are government property, and they are not transferred with used vehicles. Perhaps that's just Louisiana though.
