For my 18 mile race on Saturday I had a bowl of cheerios, glass of milk and a glass of OJ at 4:30 am. Then on the bus ride down I drank 2 quarts of gatorade. During the race I had gel packs at mile 6ish and 12ish.
It worked pretty well.
In this months runners world (which some people here like and others hate) They recommend a bagel with peanut butter.

I usually don't like to eat before a run or race, just because I don't want it coming back up during or afterwards. But I know that it's very important to eat something, so I try to eat something small, like a bagel or granola bar.

I usually have a very small cold potato with salt, a hand-full of raisins and a gel thing on the starting line.
Coffee is a diuretic which means you could dehydrate faster than normal, I don't take the chance weighing in at 45kg I'd rather do without. If it is caffeine you are after, some of the energy gel things are packed with it.
Oh and a small piece of banana before I start also goes down well.
I am notorious for eating on the route though - actually at just about every table after 15km, but you need to find what works for you.

I like to get energy I'll use in different stages, some salt, some potassium, and some caffeine. So I make myself a 'texas-sized' banana muffin, with extra egg whites added in, and a bit 'o peanut butter swirled in too (carbs, protein, a little fat). It isn't heavy, and it has the added bonus giving rise to good memories: eating afternoon snack as a kid. And of course I drink water. But no coffee (I hate those porta-john lines!). Instead? Chocolate covered espresso beans!

A homemade raw milk kefir drink with some frozen fruit blended in. I am not a morning eater but like someone said before, so what you always do in training...
