| It's not necessarily salary.
Housing - homes/condos/townhouses - are uber-expensive in Chicago. No way I would live there. It's also stuff like that that gets taken into consideration.

My mom, MoGo, travels 1.5 hours each way, each day. She doesn't do it for some huge salary. She does it b/c she's in a specialized field and there weren't companies that did what she did near her where she could get a job. She's almost 64 years old and has been doing this for several years. She doesn't seem to mind, she gets to read the entire NYT on the way to work.

I'm with ya Brian. I did the metropolitan lifestyle with a 45-min commute each way for a couple years. Realized I'd never afford a home close enough to the job to end the commute. So I took my 4-yr degree and CPA credentials and moved to a community of 400, took the only accounting job available at 20k a year and regained MY SANITY. We've moved once since then and I've climbed upwards with a few jobs for a little better standard of living, but since I've BTDT, I've got no sympathy for extreme commuters (I even did one year of 75-milers each way). Like Sahara sez, it's all a choice about MONEY and when that becomes the focus of your days and much of your nights, life goes by too fast, it really does.

Your work situation sounds soooooo nice. It is my hope to eventually move back to Michigan and work at a school where I could live in a small town....sigh.....

It's not always about money. Like Go suggests, if you're highly specialized the jobs are not everywhere. If you're unwilling or unable to uproot yourself and your family, you commute to where your jobs are.

If it weren't for the money, most 'specialists' would prolly find a different career choice. Naw.. it's about the money.

My field negates your statement. I've worked hard to get to the top of the food chain, so there's money here. But 5 years ago it would have been difficult for me to find work outside of a major metropolis at a much lower payscale, as I was a true specialist. I loved what I did, and wouldn't switch to another job to save the world. But I had to be near a city. So naw, it's not always about money.

I am. Partially because of the portability of the teaching profession.
Nice that you mock the profession, and me. True colors showing again.

I commute about 2 1/2 hours a day (1:15-ish each way), sometimes more.
I took this job because it was about a 75% increase in pay over my last job...

It's about the money. Can I see a show of hands from volunteers that travel 2 hrs. each way to not get paid?

Getting paid and getting money are two different things in my book. I can get paid at the 7-11. I can't get money there. I'm a different case, though. I'm not a person supporting their entire family on a salary, so I have options. Some people, not so lucky.
Question for you: how long is your commute on bike timewise, and how long would it be by car?

Hey, jrjo, since you don't know anything about it, don't assume you know better. Truly, you don't.
