Our son was 4 years old during the last presidential election, and for his birthday that year we gave him a castle with 2 good knights (in gold) and two bad knights (in black). When he asked me what the good guys were called I naturally told him the Democrats and the bad guys, or course, were the Republicans. He called them that for the longest time and would even ask to play Democrats and Republicans.
Blue - a very general difference between the two parties is Repubs believe in less government, Dems more. Repubs are conservative in fiscal and social matters, Dems liberal.
(that didn't offend anyone, did it?)

from a government teacher here:
basically what the parties are is this: coalitions of groups trying to win elections.
there are numerous different issues that could be debated: gun control, abortion, education, etc...
What makes the two parties what they are is a kind of a general feel...Democrats are more likely to be pro-choice, but they don't have to be. Republicans are more likely to against gun control, but they don't have to be.
Just lots of different groups of people who join with other people who think similiar to they do. Not on every issue, but on most issues.
I consider myself Republican, because I identify with most of their issues, however not all. If a Democratic candidate came along and matched my political opinions better than a Republican, I'd vote for them in a heartbeat.
Some people are single issue voters. However a candidate stands on that issue is how they are going to vote.
Others are hard line party members, they want their side to win.
It all can get quite complicated, in the end, what is the difference between the two parties? very, very little.

And I bet lesson #2 dealt with bipartisanship, inclusiveness, and tolerance.
