In any case, order-taking at the retail level appeaers to be declining in quality. And there will probably be far fewer such jobs in the future as more marketers make adjustments in their mixes and turn to self-service selling. |

This may be true as a result of the sharpest employees beginning as order takers but quickly being recognized and promoted accordingly.
Or if not promoted, they move on to things which challenge them.

Whatever you do, do it well.
Work ethic is a separate issue from salaries.

Poor order taking could be the result of a variety of things. Language processing deficits, perhaps English is not this person's first language to begin with, busy environments making it hard to focus on what the customer is saying, multiple substitutions in the order, and as the quotee is saying, apathy.

And there is a little kick in the pants with that.

I made the following observation this weekend...it's not totally off-track....so bear with me.
I know we've have the discussion in the past about tipping.....and there have been many studies done that show that MidWesterners are poor tippers. After spending the weekend in NYC, I have to wonder: what came first the poor tips or the poor service. After the service I received in the city, I can only say that I'm not getting that in Wisconsin. You hear that NYers are demanding, but if so, they've demanded the service industry into good service for their tip. Unfornuately for the waitstaff in WI, I'm quite sure that 15% is way too much for them!
I agree with the direction that we are going....everything is getting more self service. I'm now checking out my own purchases at retail stores!! I was p/o last time because some store manager came running up screaming because my 10 year was helping load the stuff to the belt so I could bag. "He can't help you".....well, who the fu$% is?????? Great job lady for that...you think I'll be coming back??
