At least a gallon a day. Lucky for me the water cooler is right next to the bathroom at the office. Take care of 2 things at once. Multitasking at its best

No, actually its a big issue here because obviously when you run on the surface of the sun you drink a lot. But you have to be sure to drink some Gatorade or something else with electrolite in it as well in order to counter the effect. Houston Area Road Runner's Association got the Houston Marathon people to space the water tables further apart to prevent this. Apparently because its more dangerous than dehydrating. |
Huh? Running on the surface of the sun? Cheryl are you drinking again or just dehydrated? HaHaHa

You should know what I'm talking about, its as hot if not hotter up there in the Metroplex than here in H-town! I'm still just getting used to the summers here...

Oh, the timing! I just got an email about this!
| Houston Area Road Runners Association wrote: | USATF Hydration Guidelines
BOSTON - USA Track & Field (USATF) on Saturday, April 19th, just
prior to the Boston Marathon, unveiled new fluid-replacement guidelines for
long-distance runners, as well as a major new initiative to educate the
distance-running public about how to properly hydrate. The new guidelines
mark a significant shift in standard recommendations for fluid replacement.
They reflect changes in scientific thinking as well as changes in the
average finishing times of marathon fields. For specifics on the
guidelines go the USATF web site at http://www.usatf.org/coaches/library/
For athletes in general and especially for those completing a
marathon in more than four hours, USATF recommends consuming 100 percent of
fluids lost due to sweat while racing. This marks a significant change from
the understanding most runners have that they should be drinking as much as
possible and following the guideline to "stay ahead of your thirst," which
has been held as the standard recommendation for many years.
Simply put, runners should be sensitive to the onset of thirst as
the signal to drink, rather than staying ahead of thirst. Being guided by
their thirst, runners prevent dehydration while also lowering the risk of
hyponatremia (low sodium), a potentially dangerous condition increasingly
seen as runners have erroneously been instructed to over-hydrate.
"The new running boom has seen more mid-pack and back-of-the-pack
runners taking up marathoning," USATF CEO Craig Masback said. "The United
States now has 30 million adult runners, a growth that has been tremendous
for the sport and the overall health of Americans. As the national
governing body for long distance running, we consider it vital that we play
a key role in educating athletes of all levels, from the four-hour-plus
marathoner to our Olympians."
hp houston marathon response
When contacted about the hp houston marathon's position on the above
hydration guideline, Dr. John Cianca, marathon medical director, provided
the following:
"We would largely agree with the USATF stance with a few exceptions.
We do not advocate nor do we favor telling athletes to try to have clear
urine before the start of the race or at any time. This recommendation is
what started the whole mess that we are in now. Runners should prehydrate
with 16-24 ounces of fluid as needed given the conditions and their
specific needs. We do not advise drinking more than 30 ounces prior to the
race.
The important point is knowing what you need, which we advocated for
the 2003 hp marathon (see http://www.hphoustonmarathon.com/index45.html).
The self test described by Dr. Casa is a more sophisticated version of
ours. Runners also need to adjust as the race progresses and we have long
advocated that runners use our weather flags as well as their own condition
to guide them in making adjustments. I do not think it is an optimal plan
to follow a rote hydration strategy.
The bottom line is that if someone wants to run a marathon they have
to take the initiative and prepare thoroughly by knowing what their
individual needs are. We have produced our own race specific guidelines and
in general the USATF guidelines are sound." |

Great topic. I drink upwards of 2 gallons of water a day because I dehydrate at the drop of a hat. Doesn't matter what season or what weather conditions, if I don't drink that much I can literally feel my skin tightening in a day.
That said, I try to hydrate evenly throughout the day and vary what I bring on runs with me in my 6oz Fuel Belt bottles:
< 60 degrees and < 8M: nothing
< 60 degrees and > 8M: 3oz per every 3M
> 60 degrees and < 8M: 3oz per every 3M
> 60 degrees and > 8M: 3oz per every 2M + 3oz Gatorade/3oz water mixture for every 6M
I try to limit what I drink on the road so I get used to being thirsty during races.
other comments:
1) I cannot believe that someone who calls herself rolling rock does not drink beer!
2) I have been known to substitute beer for water.

I usually drink water before and after a run. Try not to drink too much right before a run though. You can get cramps. Sport drinks are good for replenishing salts lost from running.
