I purchased a new vacuum this Saturday. Upon returning Chez Partay I realized I had a 10% off coupon. Sunday I return to Best Buy to have them credit my account the 10%. The vacuum was on sale for $150.99. The girl processes the credit, and says "Your account will be credited $7.49 + the tax." I tell her that's wrong, and she says, "Well, that's what the computer calculated." I told her no, that's only 5%, and she starts getting beeotchy because "lady, I know math".

"So," I ask, "How many tens are in a hundred?"

"Ten," she replies, rolling her eyes.

"So how many tens are in a hundred and fifty?"

Blank stare. Feeling charitable, I help her out. "More than ten, you think?" She agrees. "So don't you think that 'more than ten' is more than $7.49?" She agrees again. Then    .

This whole transaction took 25 minutes. This chick was at least 16. Don't they teach basic math like percentages anymore???

I mean, it's not like I was at Wal-Mart or anything .... Wink

best buy does sell calculators Wink

The computer could have done the work if she would've hit the 1 and 0 button also, but that would include reading.

Good going Lauri, handled that one well.

How can you teach math to a child that can't keep a beat? Wink

I had a smart comment, but then I realized I'm quoted by jrjo and all is well in the world for me.

They don't teach anything the rest of us would recognize as math in school. Hand a kid a graphic caluclator and they can do miracles, give them a piece of paper and a pencil and they get that glazed over look...

And there's your answer right there. Why learn basic math when a computer will do it for you?
