The umployment "figures" from the government also probably includes people who willingly remove themselves from the work force due to their own financial independence or a whole host of different issues (not related to so called poverty). |
No you are right that lacking a job does not necessarily mean poverty. However, the unemployment rate as I understand it from economics classes is defined as the percentage of employable work force that are unemployed and actually looking for jobs. |
I'm pretty sure that this is right. I haven't "worked" for years and I don't count as unemployed and some years I do actually report income. If I started looking for a job today, though, I wonder how I'd ever become part of the unemployed crowd?

I think you'd be considered a "discouraged worker", which means you stopped looking for work. You's be considered unemployed iff you got another job and then got laid off. I think.

I'm a discouraged worker, but I haven't stopped working.

I thought unemployment statistics were just culled from the # of people contacting the ESC offices.

Is that where you get unemployment? If so, thats my impression too, except I think to continue receiving unemployment you have to prove you are actually looking for a job (Vandalay enterprises anyone?).

My impression (and knowledge from sociology class, though small and possibly incorrect) is that unemployment percentage represents people that are actively looking for jobs but are unable to get one.
