In apartments there is this unspoken freecycle code as people seem to get rid of big items when they move into and out of apartments and they don't fit into the dumpster. People set them out and other people pick them up. I've seen some nice things put out and hilariously carried away within minutes. Grills, futons, kitchen tables, lawn chairs, I took an Astros golf sized umbrella once....
Anyway, I just took out the trash and found this Eureka Super Broom, its one of those electric sweepers thats great for tile or wood floor (we have both and I'll have both at my next place too). Just sitting there. It works great, I just cleaned our kitchen! I feel like I stole it or something, but why would someone put it next to the dumpster if they didn't want it, right? sweet.
/I totally just curb shopped

Every Friday is bulk pickup day in our fifedom. Guys with pickups are cruising the driveways starting Thursday night. It is very rare that any bulk item that I have put out on Thursday night is still there in the morning

In Maine that is a traditional system! If you need something, you just cruse aroung town and the back roads and chances are you will find it setting out with a FREE sign on it. Ask MW!
We have bulk trash day once a month. A few months back I got some new looking ramps that you drive your vehicle up on when you want to work underneath.
One man's trash is anothers treasure as my dad used to say....

Any of you guys want a freezer that only works like a fridge?
It's free to whoever will haul it away.
I've got a dead rose bush to throw in for free, too.
