If you could go back in time, grab any historical figure, and give them the American presidency to whip the country into shape, who would it be and why? Nationality or time period not an issue.

As much as I revere President Lincoln. He couldn't cut it in today's political climate. He didn't have a good speaking voice (despite the voice overs on the TV Specials). He was not attractive, and wouldn't have handled the media scrutiny well.
You would need someone that could not only whip the country into shape, but make them like you while you did it.
I really don't know who you would pick. Many people who are remembered fondly were not liked muchwhile in office: (Lincoln, JFK, etc...)
Many who were popular in office are looked back on in ridicule. (Nixon, US Grant)
My best guess would be someone like Mikhail Gorbachev...who took over an incredibly difficult situation, tried his best to turn it around, and was looked upon as a hero by many.

Plus he wouldn't be able to attend many official functions. That tall hat would prevent a grand entrance.
