Posted: 12/30/04 - 14:03 Post subject: computer question: re phone jack...
So, I'm really thinking about losing roadrunner and going to a dialup situation. I'm spending entirely too much for cable and internet right now, and I want to start spending our money more wisely come 2005. I'd love to drop all the time warner services (which amount to about $110/month).
Question I have is this. I'm looking at the back of the new computer tower, and there is not a regular phone jack back there, just the one that the cable uses. Does this mean I cannot switch to dialup even if I wanted to?

what you would need to do is change the modem card.

I'd add a modem card. You may want to go back to cable someday and if you ever want to network you'll need that ethernet port (which is what I'm guessing you are using now). You can also get an external modem that would attach to your computer through the ethernet port.

Ok, I like the idea of an external modem. I've found this one, pretty cheap:

What do you think?
I was thinking I could take the one out of the old tower and put it into the new one, but I'm not sure I wouldn't break something if I did that. I know how to install things after watching Kramer do it a dozen times, but not sure I'm comfortable trying it myself without a computer guru nearby to help.

Michael says that brand is probably a POS. You want to stick with a 3COM or USRobotics or another name brand if that's going to be your main internet service, since the modem makes a big difference with speed.
Also, he says do you realize how much slower dial-up is going to be? He says to call up TimeWarner and tell them to
1.) drop the cable services to the basic service, and
2.) you're pretty sure you want to cancel your internet service because you received an offer in the mail for DSL service for $19.99/year. The purpose of telling them this is that they will then bargain with you, and drop your current service's price. He says play dumb blonde.

well, Time Warner will "be sad to lose you as a customer". Oh well, it was worth a shot.
No worries though. I called my phone people, changed my phone plan so I can save some money there, added dsl which should arrive next week, and once I have that squared away I will drop all of Time Warner's services. Basically I'll save about $130/month with all these changes. Having Will in before/after school care won't be such a struggle that it was going to be.
I'm sure we'll survive without cable for a few years. We have scads of videos and dvd's, and we can get movies at the library as they are available. We will all live to tell the tale, of this I'm certain.
Thanks for the input everyone!
