My friends got this Movie game on DVD that was really fun, but some of the movies were classics (like AMC, Jimmy Stewart, Gene Kelly, etc) I hadn't seen. So, I thought I might fill the Netflix queue with some really good older movies rather than the entire teen genre of newer movies. So help me out.
Name some classic movies you think everyone should see or you enjoyed.

Do you have a crush on Myrna Loy? If you answered yes, then I'd heartily recommend the entire Thin Man series.

Is that required? Will I not like them if I don't?

The whole Thin Man series is pretty good. William Powell is teh cool.
The original Thin Man is rated #234 on IMDB's top 250 list.

Anything Hitchcock. Vertigo was great!
I'm trying to remember the others we watched in my Film & History class.....I know Citizen Kane was one, and Rear Window.....and if you like foreign films, Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal are also good.

What are they called? I found "thin man"....what are the rest of the series called?
And yes, I have added Vertigo, Rear Window and Citizen Cane, those are all ones I've heard of and haven't seen for whatever reason...

You can start with the American Film Institute's Top 100 films. There are some very good movies on that list out of the ones I have seen and you get a mix of classic and contemporary.
Otherwise you might want to look at particular directors: Martin Scorsese (his work of the 70's), Alfred Hitchcock, Elia Kazan (On the Waterfront, in particular), Billy Wilder (Some Like it Hot, The Apartment, Sunset Boulevard), William Wyler (Ben Hur, Roman Holiday), Stanley Kubrick (2001, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove), Akira Kurosawa (Ran, The Seven Samurai), David Lean (Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr Zhivago), Woody Allen (Annie Hall)
Other classic movies, which may or may not be on a list:
Chinatown
The Manchurian Candidate
High Noon
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The African Queen
Spartacus
Planet of the Apes (the original is quite good)

Alright, Roger ebert just lost some credibility with me with "Blowup" being on the list fairly high...I spent half a semester watching/talking about/writing papers about that stupid film
although I think it was that semester and review of that movie ad nauseum that made me think Austin Powers was that much more funny...

I don't completely agree with Ebert. Recently he put The Quiet American on his top 10 list while ignoring Philip Noyce's superior Rabbit Proof Fence (Noyce had two films out that year).
