Alright, Roger ebert just lost some credibility with me with "Blowup" being on the list fairly high...I spent half a semester watching/talking about/writing papers about that stupid film
although I think it was that semester and review of that movie ad nauseum that made me think Austin Powers was that much more funny... |
wait...maybe that's not the movie I'm thinking of....

No definitely not that. The review of blow up sounds like the right one, but the trailer doesn't look right. whatever movie it is, I only want to know just to discourage others from seeing it.
There wasn't much talking in the one I saw, lots of visual, psychadelicness. Lots of 60s silliness. And London. Remember the scene in Austin Powers where they are doing a photo shoot? That is straight out of this movie (blow up?)

Yeah. But very few words. Like I thought we didn't even know the photographers name. And I don't remember a murder.
ANYWAY

I don't know where you can find her reviews or if she did top 10 lists or anything, but if Ebert is the grandpappy of modern day movie criticism, Pauline Kael is the grandmammy. She has written several books, I know, but they may or may not be hard to find. Ebert and Kael would give an interesting, competing viewpoint on classic films.

For some good stuff I would look up the list of "Essentials" put out by TCM. Some very good movies in that list, not just old stuff either.
John Ford Westerns are pretty good escapist fare. John Wayne movies are good entertainment at any time.
I enjoyed "Twelve Angry Men" for the tremendous acting in it. Most Bogie movies are good.

On Borrowed Time is an excellent movie, but it's not available on DVD yet. If you want to stop by the house, I'm sure we've got it on VHS.

What are they called? I found "thin man"....what are the rest of the series called?
And yes, I have added Vertigo, Rear Window and Citizen Cane, those are all ones I've heard of and haven't seen for whatever reason... |
Unfortunately the only Thin Man on DVD is the first one. BUT I do recommend it, if for nothing else, to watch Powell and Loy drink themselves into LIVER DAMAGE as they solve their crimes. OMG I'm not kidding. Example: Loy sits down as Powell is sipping his martini and orders one. She asks him, "How many have you had?" Six is the reply. "Oh waiter, bring me five martinis and just line them up right here..." Madeline watched it with me and said "jeeeze they drink a lot!"
Some of my personal faves:
The Big Sleep. Bogart and Bacall at their best. You'll need a notebook to keep up with the plot. Don't bother. Just enjoy the show, because you'll want to see it again some time and you'll be able to enjoy the plot just as much that time as well. William Faulkner wrote a good part of the screenplay, and it shows. Some of the best dialogue out there. I own this one. I've seen it about five bajillion times.
The Maltese Falcon. Another Bogart great. Not as convoluted as The Big Sleep, but the acting is superior across the board. Mary Astor plays the best hapless femme fatale I've ever seen, Peter Lorre is downright slimy, and Sydney Greenstreet defined "The Man" in this one.
North by Northwest. Cary Grant always cracks me up not because he's funny, but because he's so good at playing such a good looking guy who's so bumbling while at the same time being so incredibly smooth. Great plot twists in this one, and Eve Marie Saint makes me want to ride a train for YEARS.
To Catch a Thief, Notorious, An Affair to Remember, Indiscreet (probably some of the GOOFIEST Grant you'll ever see), Houseboat are all great Grant movies. Charade is a great LATE Grant with Audrey Hepburn with a great plot.
Roman Holiday is a great Hepburn classic. If you want a really CREEPY Hepburn, Wait Until Dark is one where she plays a blind woman who is stalked by a couple of thugs who think she has their heroin-filled doll. And Sabrina is probably my favorite of hers. Talk about another one who makes me stop breathing.
Some others:
GILDA - ooh I saw this movie and Rita Hayworth just makes me stop breathing.
MURDER, MY SWEET - sitting on my TV now from NetFlix
THE BIG HEAT - not great, but not bad. I'd say put it on the "B" list
TOUCH OF EVIL - tough to watch, but a great flick. Very slow moving and VERY dark. Literally. On all levels.
STRANGERS ON A TRAIN - classic plot, you'll see it rehashed many times over later in TV and movies.
ok I'll shut up now. Can you tell I like old movies?

The Thin Man are great--I loved them because of the wire fox terrier named Asta.
12 Angry Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
I also liked A Touch of Mink. Just fun, candy-like.

To Kill is an awesome movie, and Twelve Angry has all sorts of guys in it you'll see later, including none other than Quincy, ME. Sam, however, did not make the cut. And, I'm here to tell you, he's just as angry in both.
