I ran the Soleburner 5K this morning, first time for me but it is a pretty big event for the community, somewhere in the neighborhood of 5000 runners and walkers though I think there are more walkers than runners. It was a gorgeous morning out for the race, almost too gorgeous for me, not used to running in the uppers 60's and sunshine. I kept wondering when the wind or rain would show up but we were spared that for the day. It was a pretty crowded start and I totally blew my first mile split by running 5:23, something I always do and need to get better at controlling. The first mile was faily level but the second mile had a decent downhill on it then a long gradual uphill, 5:53 for that mile, things were getting tougher. Mile three ran along the river for a while and down through the old section of town before climbing a nasty little hill back up to the finish. After the hill there was about a quarter mile stretch to the finish, as I got closer I could see the clock and thought maybe I had a chance at breaking 18:00 so I gave a bit of a finishing kick, passing one guy about 25 yds before the line, not something I am usually keen on doing but I wanted that first sub 18:00 for the year but I was just a bit too late with that kick and wound up with a 18:01. Overall I finished 14th, 8th in my age bracket (10 year brackets, go figure....) I guess that was my last race before Madison, now a last long run and then on to a long taper.

Great Job CJAY!

I have the same problem with going out to fast in the first mile. Granted I dont go out that fast Smile

I am sure you can get past that 18:00 minute barrier after the marathon.
