I thought some of you might find this interesting since Dallas is on a few people's 'to-do' list this year...Amazing accomplishment.

On December 14th of this year at the Dallas "Run the Rock" Marathon, HARRA member Bill Duer will complete his 5th consecutive year of running a "Marathon a Month" (60 consecutive months). Bill also enters a new age group, 70-74, the day of the Dallas Marathon. Interestingly enough his streak began at Dallas in December 1998. Bill now lives in Mena, Arkansas but has strong ties to the Houston Running Community. At my request, Bill recently shared some background information on his quest which I have summarized as follows:
looking for a unique challenge to test his tenacity and abilities
relatively injury free during 18 years of running
hill training on trails and dirt roads in Arkansas a definite plus
17th consecutive year of recording a run every day
initial challenge - finding marathons during the summer months
next challenge - struggling through marathons in the hot summer months,
specifically Okoboji in Iowa
runs to be competitive, not just to finish
must finish within official time limit in order to count the marathon
age group award winner (top three or better) in 90% of the marathons
marathons completed in 38 states
next four are Demar (NH), Ocean State (RI), Run the Rock (Dallas) and HP Houston
most memorable was Pikes Peak Marathon this past August |
Wow. I want to do that when I'm 70. Awesome.

That's amazing, he has been mostly injury free at his age with that kind of mileage

That is truly amazing, and the first nice thing I've ever heard about Arkansas.
edited to add, Dallas better be on your "to do" list this year Pffff

The Razorbacks beat the Longhorns pretty soundly last weekend. That was big news.

Not so 'big' amongst the predominantly UT Alumni Pffff clan. I heard about it. And heard about it. And heard about it...
Kattzoo...I've checked all my finals schedules and things look good, so I'm thinkin' yeah and I'm thinkin' half. Is that acceptable? I just need a firmer travel commitment than 'that could be cool' from my main running friend and then I'm in like flynn.

Runner X - I said "nice thing" not "big news" GEEZ!
Pffff - very cool for the half, that would be wonderful! I'm still doing the full since the insanity hasn't wore off. Kick your running partner in the pants! (my finals are the week before!)

That guy should donate his body to science. He's obviously got some great bone structure and joint durability underneath all the soft stuff.
He rocks!

Does this mean he was injury plagued before that, or that he only started 18 years ago, at age 52?
That's a pretty amazing feat.

Yeah, I read that as he started at 52, but I'm not sure. I forwarded it on to my mom and told her that was her next goal anyway!!

He should have been put in a home the day he turned 64.

Really. Dang fool. He should be shuffling around in his slippers and pinching the nurse's behinds.
