the brake light came on when the emergency brake wasn't on. and the brakes were going all the way to the floor without stopping the car. So I thought that meant the car needed brake fluid, and I put some in. But that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.
Could the carheads weigh in, please? Thanks.

I figured if it wasn't about the brake fluid, it has to get seen by someone professional. Thanks.

You may want to consider getting towed there...

Just cut a hole in the floor board, screw metal plates to the bottom of your shoes an your golden. Brakes are overrated.

I am not speaking from personal experience.

Sounds like a wheel cylinder or brake line let go...or even the master cylinder went south. putting fluid in will not help unless you bleed the air out of the system.
All of the above requires a mechanic or someone who knows what they are doing and have the experience.
MAKE THEM SHOW YOU WHAT IS WRONG..AND THE DEFECTIVE PARTS!! If they are an honest shop, they will do this for you.
