Posted: 12/13/05 - 09:28 Post subject: cancer facts (if you are interested)
These are a few of the billions of facts I have to know for my exam tomorrow and they are fascinating (to me).
Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women with approximately 40,200 women dying every year, falling only behind Lung Cancer. The good news here is: Early detection is a key ingredient in prevention of death. The survival rate of patients with Breast Cancer is 86% five years after diagnosis and 76% ten years after diagnosis.
Breast Cancer is not just a risk for women, as an estimated 1,690 men will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2005.
Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men (following skin cancer) and the second leading cause of death (following lung cancer)
Lung cancer ranks as the second common cause of cancer in most Western countries, but it has more deaths than colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined.
The expected 5 year survival rate for patients diagnosed with lung cancer is 15%.
Melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults ages 20-30 and is highly curable when detected in early stages. Australia has the world’s highest prevalence of Melanoma overall.
Lung cancer is considered an “invisible cancer”, tending to be overlooked by most researchers since cigarette smoking, the primary risk factor, is seen as the “fault” of the smoker. In Small Cell Lung Cancer, 98% of those diagnosed were/are smokers.
Testicular cancer is diagnosed in about 8,000 Americans a year and is the most common form of cancer in males from age 15 to 34. With a 5-year overall survival rate of 93%, it is one of the most curable types of cancer. A painless enlargement or heaviness in the testicles is often the only symptom observed by the patient.
The rate of cancer deaths rose from 17% in 1967 to 23% in 1990. If lung cancers were excluded from those numbers the rate would NOT have increased.
Long story short: don't smoke!
Sorry if this is depressing, I find it so interesting.

So you're chances of dying from lung cancer are far greater than Prostate and skin.

Re: skin, we only really talk about melanoma, as basal and squamous cell cancers are so prevalent (but easily treated) that the numbers would go off the charts. Wear your sunscreen, people! Melanoma when caught early is treatable. The way I understand prostate cancer is, all men will develop it eventually if nothing else kills them first (thats happy, right?) Lung cancer has more deaths than colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined.
Really the moral of the story is, be familiar with your body and how it works, so you can recognize when a change occurs, because if you find most of these early enough, there are far greater chances for remission.
Small cell lung cancer: its the less common of the two major types of primary lung cancers (the other is called "non small cell") but, it basically is found only when it metastisizes elsewhere, which by that point its not good. Sad to me that just because its caused by smoking that not much research is put towards it.
