My brother moved in with us back in November. He came here from Lake Louise with nothing, found himself a job and settled in. For Easter weekend he went back there to party with buddies and was supposed to take the bus home last night, arriving around 3:00 AM. So far, no brother, no phone call. I have the sneaking suspicion he won't be coming back.
You know, because he had a good, high paying job here and was cleaning kitchens for minimum wage there. But waaay more friends to smoke dope with there.

Dorks! The lot of them, clearly.
It's not MY business if he decides to stay there, but crap! We got him this job and he was supposed to be making a life finally, blah blah.

It stinks, I know, but you can't help those who won't help themselves.

Well, I seem to have touched a nerve here so here is the story!
He had lived for the last 10+ years in Lake Louise, working in the hotels there. Lake Louise is in the middle of a national park and there is a strict moratorium on building, so there is NO private housing. If you live/work there, you live in accomodations provided by whatever hotel you work for. That means that everything from the bed you sleep in to the china you eat off of belongs to the hotel. Rent is deducted automatically from your cheque, and there are no utility bills. So, it's a total fantasy world for an adult to live in. Most people there are just graduated high school; they stay a season or two and move on.
Reminder: Bryce was there 11 YEARS!
He was amazed at how much a power bill was, because he has NO CLUE. He had his wallet stolen about 6 years ago but since the hotel direct deposited his cheques he never felt the need to get new ID. We have cashed all of his paycheques since he moved here, since he couldn't open a bank account without ID. He doesn't even have a birth certificate and has made no move in 6 months to get one.

And don't apologize. It is painful and incredibly frustrating to watch people self-destruct and take others down with them and to not be able to do anything about it. I vote for padded bats and primal scream therapy.

So whats the problem here? Who says he has to conform to what others determine his way of life should be? If he likes the simple life of working in a hotel and not even needing an ID then so be it.

This is really the attitude I am trying to go with but sometimes he just irks me.... Twisted Evil
And why is it my job to cash his cheques?
He does as little as possible so that others will take up the slack and do it for him and then claims we're smothering him. (?)

It's not your job to cash his checks. Don't enable him. If he wants to live that life then let him do what little is required of him. Give him a month and tell him at the end of that month it's all up to him and then stick to your guns. He'll continue to do as little as possible until others quit doing it for him.
