I have been trying to figure out a way to bike to work but I live alone so I wouldn't have any outside help, as no one in my family lives close, and it is a 19 mile ride (on the highway, probaly 25 side roads). I thinking I may drive to a park and ride, then ride the bike from there, that way it would be about a 10 mile bike ride, and closer if I needed assistance.

taxi?

The Atlanta area has a "guaranteed ride home" program if you sign up for it.

I live out in the boonies and there isn't a taxi service that would help me. I am sure I could get my brother to help me, but it would be a long wait and a big pain.

I've never had a problem other my chain popping off.

I'd recommend a small pump, a spare tube, and the tools you need to change a tire shoved into a sadde bag. That's all I take on my rides (well, my cell phone too) as my just-in-case kit.

Just once in the early days when I couldn't change a tyre.

I ride about 300k per week, and our roads are pretty crappy so flats are quite common. But neary every time I have had a flat, there has been some nice man riding by who has stopped and helped me - which means with them being a man and all, they change the flat for you. People riding in the rural area where I do my training are so kind Cool .
