I'm setting out this coming weekend to purchase...pretty sure. I want to be ready.

Don't know your finacial situation but... I would heartily recommend you go to a REAL bike store (Not a Dick's Sporting goods) and talk to the sales staff. More importantly, get fitted properly. Good bikes come in many sizes
What do you want to do ? Centuries every weekend ? 25 - 30 Miles a ride ?
I did some checking before I bought. I do like my Greg LeMond Etape. It was that or the Trek 1000 - same comparable bikes. Costs will be in the $ 700 +/-. The next models up will cost about $ 1,200.
Suggest you take more than one weekend to look around and make a purchase.

as mentioned a road repair kit is great and yes get sized too, you can mess up your knees if not sized right.
I also reccomend some good bike gloves and some decent polycarb eye glasses for both sun and safty, a bug at 25 mph in the eye can sting

In addition to the bike itself?
Water bottle holders or a Camelbak.
Helmet.
Spare tubes, tire levers if tires require it.
Pump.
Computer for that all important data.
Sunglasses.
Cycling shorts.
Light if you're going to ride at dusk, dawn, or at night.

Was recommended to get a triple chain
double clip pedals (lots of stoplights here in Phoenix area)
carbon fork bike (not total carbon)
aerobars put on
What's your take?
Cappy...yes...shoes/pedals
Bikes? Looking at spending $800 for the bike itself.
