I can swim - I just don't have the breathing technique down. I'd love to take lessons one of these days. It seems I'm not flexible enough and when I turn my head to breathe I can't get my face out of the water enough.

i took them when i was little, but i apparently didn't retain much.
needless to say i think it's gonna be interesting learning how to swim now that i'm 6 ft vs. 4 ft...
so are you a good swimmer? i can't even swim laps to get in the deep end (as i always maintained - the deepend is for the diving board, who the hell swims back and forth 4 times before going back to the board?).
would you take lessons? i start at level 2. that's like just above putting your face in the water level 1. nice eh? |
BTW, I think that the lessons are a much better way to learn proper form and technique than a book. This is something that must be actively be practiced while learning, rather than read and later applied. That's my opinion, if you want it.
It's best to start at the most basic level and learn properly than try to do too much too soon, as with any other sport. Don't lok at it as a chore, look at it as enjoyment of a different world. I forget that I am actually exercising when I go snorkeling, even though I am still swimming properly for a good portion of it. I guess everyone gets their enjoyment and loses themself in one form of exercise rather than another.
Good luck and have fun!

i'm very comfortable swimming freestyle in a POOL and have been told i have perfect form. i eavesdropped on alot of private swimming lessons when i was a kid, i'd listen to what this guy was telling the 'paying' kids over and over again and just learned by stealing the lessons. what a little worm!
i have recently learned that my wind in the pool is nothing compared to my wind on the road. how can i run 13 miles unwinded and become winded so quickly in the pool??....probably cuz they lied and my form sucks. that's why.
but,i love swimming. in the pool.

Because if you are swiming with proper form, you are using a lot more muscles, plus dealing with breathing correctly in the water. It requires a lot more concentrated effort, IMO.
That's a great way to get free lessons! Good for you!
I love to swim in the ocean and the pool. Considering the shape of our ocean recently from the hurricanes (they dredge up seaweed, trash, debris, all entangled in the seaweed, and don't get me started on that! ) I will be doing a lot more
in the pool. Thankfully we have a lovely pool at the local park, but it's not the same as swimming in the ocean with a mask and snorkel and seeing all the aquatic life.
I'm really afraid we may not be able to swim safely on the bayside for quite some time, due to the oil/chemicals, etc that will drift from Katrina and Rita. It will eventually impact the Atlantic side as well.
Makes me mad. and sad.
