I suck at swimming. I used to attend swim practice sessions 2-3X a week with the school triathlon club as a form of cross training for my running. The sessions do provide some variety and give a great workout but I'm probably one of the slowest swimmers there (if not the slowest) despite having the aerobic fitness from my running (I can still swim quite a number of laps)...This is because my technique's crappy and I find it very difficult to change it.

I went from panicking when I hit the deep end of a public pool to being able to swim 1000m (incredibly slowly) in open water in one summer. I swam a LOT though. And I read a lot of swimming books.
If I didn't have such a fear of commitment I'd join Masters Swimming.

When I practice and train, I can be half-decent at swimming. I'm going to get back into it next spring. I like the benefits from swimming and how I feel when I'm done.

If by "good swimmer" you mean posessing the ability to not drown, then yes, I am a good swimmer. I have poor form no doubt, but I can swim well enough.

I can't swim. I want to do tris someday. I'd take lessons or have my wife teach me.

I can't swim either. I took lessons and still can't do it. I gave up on the tri thing.

Good luck with lessons, blue and Pug!

I love swimming, but I am not good at it. I can swim laps, but I know that my form is like a brick with arms and legs and boobies which allow it to float.

I am only average. I can't do the turn the head thing while doing strokes. I can lumber my way across the pool etc but if I was ever going to attempt a tri then I would have to take some lessons. I am sure my form stinks.

Without bragging, I can say that I am an excellent swimmer. My nick name(from my husband and friends, given while out about three miles on the Atlantic, snorkeling) is "The Little Mermaid".

I have been swimming since about the age of three and love it. I used to be a lifeguard, and also volunteered at the Y in Columbus for the "Overcoming Fear of Water" and beginning swimming leson classes.

I am probably more comfortable in the water than walking. Larry has been getting more into swimming and snorkeling too, which has helped his recovery from the hip replacements tremendously. I'd like to think I have a small part in it. Wink

One thing about the water; it's soothing, low impact, works all of your muscles (for those into it from strictly the exercise aspect). For a great stress reliever, there is nothing like going snorkeling and diving for a few hours. It's not your world anymore, but you are welcome.

Alright. I've had too much caffeine.

for those that read the books on swimming - what would you recommend?

i guess my dad did a lot of that for his cycling (books) so maybe that might be helpful.

i hope to hit the pool a few times a week. it's likely to become my second home over the coming cold months and the winter...

they say it's pretty much just practice.

i'm hoping for good form, good exercise, and the ability to swim the long way back and forth in the pool a bunch of times.

and maybe not losing so much when we play water tag (at least not drowning anyway).

side note - i love how it seems to be "i can not drown" or "i have a cousin who's a fish" talent levels Smile
