Wow. Didn't mean to cause such a stir. Sorry that I wasn't able to reply sooner.

First, regarding the "you better" comment. Exactly what Go said. I just didn't appreciate the tone. I wasn't at all being sarcastic in my response. I was actually a little peeved.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic in my "God forbid" response either. Though I do agree with Go in the sense that by having CR in this position it really won't change things much. Basically I do not respect CR. The way she handled her testimony for 9/11 really bothered me. I agree with Go that I think she is a liar. One of the reasons that the Bush administration really likes her is because she is so loyal to Bush...which is one of the reasons that she makes me uncomfortable.

On a more personal note, she disappoints me as a woman and as a minority. She will stand up for certain women or African-Americans...but only those that she picks and chooses. She doesn't use her power and position to advance the causes of these groups...and I personally think that she should.

How about she use her position to advance the causes of all Americans? (Not just a select few groups.) More class warfare from the left?

P.S. A cabinet member should be loyal to the adminstration/President that picked said person. That's kinda of the whole point isn't it?

I agree with Sonny in a couple of ways. Dr Rice should do her job (whether it is as NSA or as Secretary of State), not go looking for pet projects to advance the causes of minorities. It's great if she has the opportunity to help people who need help, but if her job as National Security Advisor does not take her into those realms, she has a tough enough job as it is.

And I also agree with the PS. Publically, a Cabinet member should support the President and be loyal to him. Privately, he or she can try to change the President's mind on any appropriate issue but once it goes public, support the Commander in Chief.

Yes and no. It is not about the fact that she should only support a select few groups, that was not the point that I was trying to make. The point is, that she is an African American woman who has risen to a position that most African American women...or any woman for that matter...may ever get to due to barriers that exist in this country in regards to minorities. I feel, as a woman, that she should use her position in any way that she can, to try and break down those barriers.

Agreed...but not to the point that you are willing to lie for them which is what I think she did when she testified re 9/11.

Very good question. Seeing that I have so many problems with this administration I don't know that there could be anyone who I would've been comfortable with. I will miss Powell just because I felt that he was one of the few whose politics I agreed with more...even though I don't feel that he was able to make much of a difference in the Bush administration.

The funny part is that is has been GOP presidents to promote minorities to the highest levels of public govt.

Reagan appointed the first woman to the Supreme Court. Bush Senior appointed the first African-American to the the Supreme Court. W appointed Colin Powell (SOS) and Condi Rice (NSA/SOS) and the first Hispanic to Attorney General.

Guess they don't get credit for this historic appointments because they aren't really minorities unless they lean to the left, huh?

I believe Thurgood Marshall was the first black Supreme Court Justice, and he was appointed by LBJ in 1967

I think the objection here is "You better..." I believe you meant to say that she needed to clarify which statement she was referring to. However, when I read it the first time, I also had to read that again. I know it's been a long day for you, Joe. "You better" implies that Claire had darn well better do something or else, which is of course not the case.

Yes, regardless of circumstance that comment was inappropriate and out of line.

I don't feel that Condi is a good role model for women. She's been in bed with corporations for so long I don't think she can be partial in the industries they fund and the issues she needs to address. I think she proved herself untrustworthy and shifty in the 9/11 hearings. Not a good role model in my opinion, but a sellout to the establishment. As a woman, she embarrasses me. Such a shame as she's an intelligent woman who's done great things at Stanford. We need another Ann Richards on the scene.

Yes, tokenism is sometimes mistaken for progressivism.

In what way was she supposed to use her position as National Security Advisor to break down barriers for minorities?
