I totally agree with Sheldon.....and I've been there too. Working in rehab we had a couple that didn't make it and went back out on the streets and OD'd. Different circumstances, because they basically did that to themselves, but it was still really hard to deal with having worked so closely with someone daily for months, seen them improve so much and then fall off suddenly.
I can tell you from experience it doesn't really get any easier, but Sheldon said it best. We have to concentrate on the ones we DID help as much as the ones we couldn't. That's the only thing that really gets me through this kind of stuff.

Ouch.
I don't think you could ever develop a tough enough skin to dull the hurt from something like that.
