Got any hot tips on buying a keyboard? My daughter wants to get herself one.

We looked at this one yesterday :: http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gPPK00005PSR292 and that about in her price range $200-$250.

Any other suggestions or comments?

How old is your daughter?

You could probably get a much better deal buying a used one of much better quality. Have you checked Ebay or the classifieds?

Daughter is almost 15. If I knew what I was looking for, I'd be spending more time looking in eBay/classifieds. I haven't owned a keyboard in 7 years and they've changed a lot since then.

Just make sure it's got the patented 'disco beat', PH.

Better yet, the Bossa Nova!

PH, for what you are looking for, that Yamaha looks pretty nice. Having a good piano sound was always important to me, and sounds like this one has a good one. Looks like plenty of fun gadgets as well.

Have you hooked it up to a computer yet via MIDI?

Nope, we are pretty computer ignorant around the house. So far we have just been using it as a piano substitute.

I'm not ready to say bad things about this model, but I'll start by saying that our school received a Yamaha PSR 530 when we purchased new music textbooks. I have not been happy with it. the model you are looking at is a lower number, so that is causing me some reservations. The 530 feels cheap to me. it is very light, which is nice for portability, but also makes it seem somewhat fragile. The sound is good, but doesn't fill the music room as it should, so some additional amplification would be better. lower numbers = lesser model

those are things that may not make a difference to you or your daughter depending on how you will use the keyboard. I like the features of that keyboard. however you won't be using most of them. it looks like you're getting some good things for the price. I'd prefer a little bigger keyboard, one with 76 keys (pianos have 88 ). and above all: Yamaha's cheapest is better than any other brand! never go with casio.

yes rtpd, the lessons are free, she just has to come up to PA. weekly.
