Thank you to all the runners and volunteers who participated in the 2006 Med-City Marathon.

As you know, the race was called because of the heat. On the advice the directors of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine, the race was called off at 11:30 AM. Our priorities on Sunday were with all runners, we understand that those of you who were able to finish before the race was called deserve to be recognized, your awards will be mailed to you. We didn't feel an awards ceremony would be appropriate with so many needing medical attention. Our priorities were with the runners who were hospitalized and those that were needing medical atttention. Our goal was to keep people safe. Thank you for understanding.

Please keep those who are still in the hospital in your thoughts.
We will be posting updated official results as soon as we can.

As I said to my wife and various other folks at the marathon: I don't like it, but I understand. It was the right decision.

I posted about this in one of the other topics about this incident.

Honestly, I think calling a race while its actually taking place (as opposed to cancelling or post-poning it beforehand) should be an extreme last measure, but from what I'm reading, it looks like it was kind of necessary.

With the number of people who were needing medical assistance, the EMS crews in the area must have been swamped, and that creates a critical situation, not only for the runners, but the residents of the area.

The race directors made the decision and ended the race before more people got hurt, and honestly, not knowing too much about the situation, I think it was probably a good idea.
