Posted: 10/17/03 - 14:27 Post subject: "well then, you'll have to fire me"
The phrase I envision myself saying to our president. We have a customer who needs training "sometime in November or December". So of course they pick the week before my marathon to start it, where I'd fly down the Sunday before and fly back that Friday, then run 26.2 and fly back that night to finish it. Again, it can be anytime in those two months, so I said I couldn't do it then due to personal & professional commitments (though I have none of the latter, I thought it sounded better).
Appears my sales guy overheard this conversation and said I need to go when the customer says I go. I said no way, because there was no urgency. He asked why I couldn't go and I told him. He thought it was a bullsh!t reason. I said oh yes, training for a year and a half for something was nothing. I agreed I should just sabotage that effort by flying/jet lag + the normal stress of travel the week before .
He said he would be taking it up with the president. I said fine. So if The Chief says I gotta go, I guess I have my answer for him already. Stupid corporate crap!

What would the scenario be if you had a week's vacation already lined up for the week before? They would move it, right? That seems sketchy and the sales guy seems like a schmuck. The client has like 7 other weeks that would be golden and it seems like they aren't picky, so whats the big deal? Good luck.

Sometimes I find myself in the same position as your sales guy...asking someone to do something that they either prefer not to for personal/family reasons or that they just plain prefer not to. I always investigate to see if I can work around staff (different date or different instructor) and not jeopardize the biz.
That guy is a rookie or a jerk.

Damn. With an 8 week window, you'd think the guy would be willing to work with it. Kids.

What an Assclown is right!!!!!
I would be super p.o.ed if I had to have this to contend with after a year+ of training. I am so weird about things not happening just so. It takes me months to get my mind set to do anything...planning and training. So, I would be very mad!

I didn't tell him - this jerk was eavesdropping on a phone conversation. Yes, that would be nice to use your services . Your arms of steel would snap his puny little neck like a twig in less than 3 seconds. I'm just mad because 1) I said earlier in the year that I wasn't going anywhere in November and all parties within the organization said it was OK, 2) I said I'd go anytime in December (even the week before Christmas!), and 3) I've been VERY accommodating with the customers this year. Sh!t, I did a whirlwind tour of training 4 sites in 3 states in a 5-week period alone earlier this year.

Can you discuss your situation with the client and see if they are sympathetic to your cause?

This kinda thing bites. I had the exact same thing happen to me about 5 yrs back. The CFO would not budge and insisted this project would take all weekend and everyone had to be there. Ended up having to pull out of the race just 2 weeks before because I had to work. And then lo and be-steaming-hold, I did the work of about 5 people and got the stinkin' project done early enough so I could have eeked my way to the race but it was too late...
