did this 5 mile run into he!! last night. so very hot at 7PM when we started. it was a bigger crowd, i'm guessing between 500-600 runners.
13th annual run put on by Latrobe Brewery. tons of Rolling Rock volunteers that did a more than awesome job of manning water stops and hosing down the runners.
it's the fourth year i've run this and i still can not "get over" the hills in the course. midway there are 1.5 mles of nothing but up. you'd think i would have been mentally prepared for that, but i wasn't.
i kept a fairly even 8:15 - 8:30 pace thru the first 4 miles and in mile 5, when i should be feeling really ready to hit the finish, i started feeling very woozy and "i'm gonna faint"....my pacer guy ran up behind me and said he knew he find me here and let's kick it in. i had to let him go on cuz i thot i was gonna drop. i did keep him in my sights though. he rocks! i've been using gels for many of the races i've run recently and didn't take one at the start last night cuz i wasn't liking the thought of it on my stomach. now i wonder if they really don't have a positive impact on my ability to finish strong.
i finished in 42:05. my last two years were 42:something too so, yeah, that's ALOT of progress.
it's still a fubby time. many serious runners show up for this and watching them fly by (it's an out and back) is amazing. many not so serious runners show up too as the race is a local tradition. the kid standing next to me at the start continued to "spit" his snuff down at our shoes while we waited for the gun.... i almost chucked at that point.
i'm mildly disappointed with my overall time as i see no progress from last year, but encouraged by the fact that i didn't give up when i really really wanted to. i just kept hearing the words "gut it out"....now where'd that come from????

Hey RR, 42.05 is still a fantastic job!
I think you did great and you should be proud of what you did do.
HILLS, HILLS, HILLS...
You were running on hills in the heat.
That being said, you did great!
Congrats!!!

Great job considering the hills, heat, and humidity...that must have been a brutal race.

Way to stick with it and kep going. I hope you had a few beers postrace to celebrate a hardearned finish. Better to stay at the same pace than to slow down. Perspective and all.
Good job. I can't wait to see how freakin' fast you're going to be in cooler weather with no hills at The Great Race!
