not sure what these are called so thingie will have to do. i'm looking to get something that'll measure my pace, time, distance, etc. but i have no idea where to start (or what they're called for that matter  )
suggestions?

A basic ironman by Timex will get you started.
Drop a couple of hundred bucks for a GPS watch and that will give you all sorts of data

I have had both the Timex GPS and the Garmin Forerunner201. The Garmin is better and it was cheaper too, about $120 bux.

I started out with a Timex Ironman with a bunch of features. They are pretty inexpensive on www.campmor.com . Hope that helps!

i use a timex ironman too. i have a $30 one that does laps/splits. i really like it and its really easy to use, even for me. im gadet-impared.

thanks, everybody!
i checked out prices and stuff on the internet, and i think i'm gonna go with a pretty basic timex ironman from campmor.com (20 bucks) to tide me over for now since my funds are pretty limited at the moment. but oh man i'm so bummed that christmas AND my birthday just recently passed b/c i want a garmin forerunner like more than anything now lol oh well... december birthdays are lame.
the biggest problem for me is determining the distance i've gone for each time i go out. i usually end up whipping out the map and a post-it note then marking my turns and everything then measuring it up to the map scale when i'm done which is a ridiculous amount of work to just get one simple number. is there anything budget-conscious on the market that'll measure my distance? or any other ideas? i could go drive my route after i run it and check the trip odometer, but that doesn't seem any less silly. or is my only options pretty much some kind of gps-based, 100+ dollar system. forgive my ignorance, i'm also pretty "gadget impaired."

That's the same watch I have. If you have a bike, stick a $10 odometer on it and ride your routes. Do this to your most common routes and you'll know exactly what you've run each time. If you want splits and stuff, mark the miles on the road with a can of spray paint. *NOTE: Watch out for the po-po if you do this. Some towns really don't want marks on their street and you may get ticketed.*

when i was running around my neighborhood frequently, i drove the route that i run with my car. i thought it was fairly accurate. added bonus, i was actually underestimating the distance i was running!
