i got a first place in my age group 40-44 today for the second time. it pays to be an aging woman in a small town as i am able to "cherry pick" these races and bring home da bomb each time!!
my time was lame - 27:00 but i ran my arse off. the first mile was uphill and my time was 8:10 but that was the literal high point. it was another really rough course with tons of PA hills. it was a beautiful morning tho - 65 degrees and no humidity.
anyway --- one excellent thing about being 44

Congrats. I got "hardware" for my age division (40-44) in my first race ever in January. Nothing shameful about "cherry picking" IMHO.

thanks EL. you know, i don't intentionally cherry pick races, it's just that i live in the land of rednecks and roadkill and philip morris is still king so i can feel like a runner for a day.
today someone asked me if i was running the Pittsburgh Great Race - like 8-10,000 entrants. gulp.

Hey, use what you got and be proud of it....that cherry picking thing works for us fat chicks too! The only race hardware I ever got that wasn't a finisher's medal was in a local 5K's Athena division last year. I can't wait for that one again!!! Great job!

Congrats! I've still got 3 more years before I jump to the next age group and have any chance of winning any hardware.

Congrats RR. I'm finding that these guys in my age group 40-44 sure ain't slowing down with age. A mid 19's 5k has produced one 3rd so far this year in age group.

you know, the mens' age groups are always more packed full of fast runners and it makes placing for a good runner almost impossible. this would be a tad discouraging to me -- a 45 yo male friend ran that race with me and got 23 and small change. he was like 12th in his age group. UGH.
there are a group of women runners in my age group that can really get great times (23 or 24 minutes). when they show, i am toast. they don't all show up very often
thanks everybody

RR, congrats on that hardware!
I'm sorry I missed this thread when you started it. I was browsing the SERJ site and decided to look at that race results, just to see if there was anyone I knew. There you were!
I have been avoiding this part of the forum since I'm not allowed to run.....why torture myself.
Glad to see you did so well. 10 women in that class and you were #1 that's great
