Holey moley, there's fire in them thar hills. All of them thar hills. Since last Tuesday we have been experiencing nuclear winter; the expected high temps are tempered by clouds of black smoke. The sun is casting an eerie orange and red glow and ash has been falling for nearly a week and there's no end in sight. More than 850 homes have burned and at least 10 people have died. Firefighters aren't even fighting the fire, they are focusing on protecting structures. One of the fires is now in a local mountain resort that has been deeply affected by drought and tens of thousands of the pines are already dead from bark beetle infestation. Those trees are going to burn like roman candles.

If anyone knows how to do a rain dance, please do it now.

I was worried about you last night when they announced that the Monday Night Football game was moved to AZ. How close to the cities is this fire?
I'll be rain dancing for you until this is over.

I'll try to do a rain dance for ya here! Sorry to hear about the fires and hope that they get put out very soon.

I just heard that the Monday Night Football game is coming to Tempe (ASU) tonight due to them. Tickets are going to be free. That's how bad it is in CA.

I don't know how much help I'd be--but if you need to evacuate you're always welcome here!

(That is for all our RR contingent in the fire zone)

I was concerned for you all when I was watching that on the news this morning. VERY scary. I heard some people were overtaken with the fire in their cars and died? How horrible. Please stay safe!

Michael left early Sunday morning to fly to Carson, CA. He should have arrived 11:19 a.m. CA time, but couldn't leave Atlanta until last night at 11:40 to fly in. He was SO crabby when he called... 3 different times they put him on a plane and he had to get off again.

Confused

Yeah, the airports have been all messed up too. But don't worry LE, Carson is well away from the fire zone.

The LA basin is surrounded by mountains. There's a range of mountains on the north side of LA county that runs east/west from the ocean to about 100 miles inland. I work in those foothills, and many people live there also. The LA fires are in these mountains. The homes/businesses that are backed up to the National Forest are the most at risk as there is nothing but dried grasses, shrubs and trees between them and the fires. Those of us who are further down in the cities are not at risk for fire, but the smoke is pretty toxic. Along with the homes that burned, so did all of the electronic equipment, batteries, plastics, etc.

I was shocked that the soccer games were still played on Saturday. Fortunately, someone got it through their thick head that all that smoke can't be good for the kidlets and games were cancelled on Sunday.

California Fire Map

If you're interested, check out this link. It shows all the spots in CA that are burning or have burned. The same site will link you to maps of all states.

Click on the map and a zoom tool will appear in the lower right corner.

I was wondering how you were doing, OL. We're pretty smokey down here and the air has that Night of the Comet glow. And the ash! We're 50 miles from the concentration of wildfires and yet are not safe from it in other ways. I feel badly for the wildlife. A distant relative lives near San Bernardino and he said mountain lions and coyotes are scrambling around in residential areas. Sad
