This is the time of year I LOVE Houston...For about 49 weeks of the year contrary to popular belief it really is fairly normal in Houston, not a lot of stetsons or wranglers, no mechanical bulls in every bar, etc etc. However, for 3 weeks its Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo time with all that involves plus associated parades and BBQ cookoff. Well, its here again and it is SO much fun! Today is "Go Texan" day, where everyone is encouraged to dig up their Justin boots and belt buckles and wear them. I work in a professional building downtown full of accountants and lawyers, its pretty amusing to see a bunch of people who look like country music has-beens load up on the elevator with you!! Also today is the conclusion of the Salt Grass trail, where ranchers from around the state literally drive covered wagons, horses and cattle into downtown Houston. Today is when they arrive, so there are actual traffic implications. I haven't seen any yet, but I'll keep you posted. Tonight I think I'm going to the BBQ cookoff and tomorrow I'm doing the Rodeo Run 10K....I love this town....

My parents actually made us do a covered wagon vacation when we were kids. Worst vacation idea EVAH! The mental scarring runs deep.
Shouldn't you be out riding your bike?

Are King Deuce and Sir Crack Peanut Butter going to be in the parade.
It has rained here everyday for a week. It is so depressing.
We haven't had the thunderstorms though.

Looks like they will be showing up in Junks instead of covered wagons this year.

I'm so jealous, Cheryl (pro-nounced "shurl")
My parents live in the Woodlands--and Houston has such a great feel to it. It feels completely different that San Antonio and Austin. (Both great cities, too)
Enjoy lots of BBQ for us!

I own NO western and I'm proud to admit that...
I'm wearing: grey wool slacks, white v-neck ribbed sweater, black VERY NON-WESTERN 9 west boots with high heels, as I laugh at those "going Texan"....

Shurl, I am just a little disappointed with you.
I know, I know, it's SO much fun to laugh at the natives and their silly customs, but you really need to embrace their culture so that you can feel a part of the whole community.
Did I just turn into Genie?
Shoes woman! Think of the shoes!
What better excuse than a community festival to be able to get a new pair of shoes!? OK, boots, but it's still footwear!

Think bolo ties, Texas flag shirts, starched wranglers, gender ambiguous Pat from SNL, or Crystal Gayle....While I'm all about an excuse to buy new clothing and embracing culture...this time? I'll have to pass.
