I've had it with this line as an excuse. I beg of the world to stop using this and think of something else. If it was an "imposition" to invite you over, it wouldn't have been done in the first place. Doncha think?

"We'd like to invite you over on Saturday"
Actual meaning cam: "My wife made me invite you guys--otherwise I'd be watching football and sleeping in the recliner in my house shorts"
"We wouldn't want to impose..."
Actual meaning cam: "The only way I can stay home and watch football in my shorts is if somehow you change your mind. Otherwise, my wife will make us go to your house.

When I say it it means:
I can't believe you like me enough to want me to come play at your house.
