Posted: 12/04/04 - 08:00 Post subject: "Thank You" etiquette
I had my Christmas party/house warming party this past Sunday and now I have thank you notes to write. Normally I would hand write them all and mail them. However, I don't have enough time to 1. Find out everyone's address, 2. Write the Thank you's, 3. Get some stamps, and 4. Mail them. The holiday's are fast approaching and I have so many things I need to do before Christmas. If I wait to do the thank you notes until after Christmas it'll be pretty late for them. So, I was thinking I would send electronic thank you notes. Since the party invitations were sent electronically I figured it would be okay to send the thank you's in the same fashion.
My question is...if this were being sent to you would you be offended? I know many of you (particularly the wimmins) would do everything in your power to mail real thank you's but how offended would you be receiving an electronic thank you.
Me, personally, I throw the paper thank you's in the mail after a period of time anyway...unless there is something extra sweet and special written inside them.

A handwritten thank you note is always nice. I personally wouldn't mind a thank you email

C'mon people...I need to make a decision on this today. I can't base my decision off of one person...although, I highly value Cappy's opinion.

I wouldn't be offended if I received nothing.
Email is fine. And with copy and paste you can do them all in a matter of minutes.

I should add that I would be bothered if the thank you email was a group thank you.

Right! I wouldn't do that. I was actually thinking of going to www.hallmark.com and sending out individual thank you's with their online greeting cards.

I think that if you do the e-greeting card you'll be fine. They have some really nice cards there, and it sometimes takes as much time to choose a card from their selection as it does from the card shop. People will understand that you've just moved and it's a busy time.

I'm really bad about sending out Thank you's. I think that's a great idea!

Sounds kind of impersonal to me. I'd do real cards later than e-cards now.

I wouldn't be offended by the email. I think promptness is more important.

Upcoming holiday busyness? It's December 3rd? Am I missing something? You got 3 weeks. Just playing the devil's advocate, but this "holiday rush" excuse I hear all over the place lately has become the boy that cried wolf to me. If it's important, you'll make the time to mail 'em. So there

I am very picky about thank-you notes and still recall whose wedding presents have yet to be acknowledged, 6 years after the wedding. Ask Rex if you need verification of what a piss I am about these things.
The main point about the TY note is that it gets done, not the medium. A call would also be OK, although if you're pressed for time, not the most efficient mode.
You're right not to send a group note. There is something nice about receiving a handwritten note but it's much better to get a prompt e-note now than a handwritten one way later. Just use the same format in the email that you would on stationery and you'll be fine.

I mentioned something like that to mrs.jrjo last month about a wedding this past summer. Then lo and behold going through some composting paperwork in the home office, I found the thank-you note
Between a postal snafu and yer own 'filing', isn't it possible your six-yr old thank you just might have been sent?
