PM Sharon seems to be a bit ticked off about something.

Quote:
“The sad and terrible conclusion is that no one cared that Jews were being killed,” Sharon said.

“At the time of the most terrible test, friends and benefactors didn’t lift a finger,” he said. “This is the Jewish lesson of the Holocaust.”

“The state of Israel has learned this lesson, and since its founding, it has defended itself and its residents, and provides safety to Jews everywhere. We know that we can only rely on ourselves,” he said.

I find most of this patently offensive, and sad. In the first place, people cared. Some died for demonstrating that. In the second place, the "safety" provided to people in Israel is at best debatable. Thirdly, if Israel can only rely on itself, then can my country quit funding it year after year? Fourth, it's true that 5+ million Jewish people died during that period. But it's equally true that 7+ million other people died, too. People like intellectuals, Gypsies, Czechs, and homosexuals. The nonrecognition of those deaths, this "ourselves alone" mentality ensures we'll never be anything but. Finally, it's a disgrace to use the anniversary of something important to further one's own agenda, particularly when that agenda includes that others will not be safe for the mere fact of their being others, the very reasoning used to oppress this group during the Holocaust.

While the deaths attributed directly to the Holacaust are mind boggling. Often overlooked are the deaths at the hands of Soviet Army, and the amount of deaths of Soviet citizens suffered as well.

Israel does have a right to defend themselves. They are surrounded by people who hate them and want them dead. They are in their land, given to them by God. It has been fought over for years. Israel legally owns the land and should fight for it. That is why the Israeli army has never lost a battle. Person for Person the best military in the world.
I bet all of the countries in the middle east could not defeat them in a battle. That is why Israel's enemies resort to terrorism.
Good for him for making a statement like that. At least the enemies know where they stand, that they will not lay down for any one.

I think you missed the point GGG was making and that I COMPLETELY agree with.

It is reverse prejudice. Why should they alienate themselves from the rest of the world. Their is a huge difference from protecting onesself, from secluding onesself.

PM Sharon is NOT speaking for me.

Close the borders and build your wall PM, you will only find more people want to get in and destroy you because YOU make yourself different, you stand alone.

Sheldon

BTW, 6 million Jews died. 13 million total people died. Not including all the soldiers that died fighting for freedom.

It was over 56 million that died in WWII, civilian and military. Including all theater (39 million civilians!)

Started all because of brutal racism of two main people/countries.

I say the PM has a right to be cautious.

But the assimilation of Jews into European populations, especially German, was a main source of Hitler's hatred, wasn't it?

Hilter was, well not very nice. Any sect should not be singled out becuase they have thoghts that are not in the main stream or that one person does not believe.

Sharon's statement only shows his arrogance.

Doubtless, but his speech wasn't about caution. It was inflaming more hate for his personal agenda and trotting out some old, incendiary ideas that do nothing but fuel more death.

Also, it's a purposeful choice of words. When Sharon says "Jews" he intends to lump us all together. He should say "Israelis."
