Saw it last night... Didn't sleep at all after that.

If the lead actress (CHARLIZE THERON) does not win an Academy award, then the whole thing is rigged.

She won it.

Excellent acting on her part, VERY disturbing movie.

I saw it this weekend. She did win the Oscar.

I know that Roger Ebert picked it as his "Best movie of the year" for last year, but i'm not sure it deserved it. Powerful (especially in the second half), but exceptional? I'm not sure.

Watching it, i was thinking about Theron's performance during the first half of the movie and i wasn't terribly impressed. She did a great job, don't get me wrong, but at that point (51 minutes, i can mark the spot) she hadn't had to work too hard for the performance. It was seeming as if she had won the award as much for the physical transformation as for any acting (see Nicole Kidman in The Hours as an example) that was done.

After that midpoint, the character started getting more passionate, more desperate, more emotional and this was causing Theron to stretch much more. She was very, very believable and effective in the performance.

It's the kind of role that the Academy seems destined to award. We have a physical tranformation with a beautiful woman changing her appearance, serious traumatization, and a complete change from previous roles (see Halle Berry in Monster's Ball, except for the physical part).

The movie itself didn't blow me away, but Theron's performance got stronger as the movie went on. I still have to see "In America", but i'd say the Academy got this one right. I didn't find Naomi Watts in "21 Grams" to be very memorable, and nor was Diane Keaton award worthy in "Something's Gotta Give".

Keisha Castle Hughes in "Whale Rider", on the other hand....

I agree with you Pug. I think that the performance of Theron was amazing here, even if the movie wasn't incredible.

I saw Monster this weekend, and Theron was positively chilling.

Also, if you were to tell me that a lesbian sex scene between Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron would be 100% not hot before this weekend, I would have called you a liar.

my wife actually shut it off. That being said, I will likely not see it.

I love CT, man the make up job on the cover art is amazing.
I am sure she will win the AW but, I will still not see it.

I agree with you Pug 100%. CL went under an amazing physical transformation for this role. It was a good movie, but I don't think it was necessarily award winning. Ditto for Halle in Monster's Ball.

Haven't finished watching it. To be honest, I've seen a version of this movie years ago with Jean Smart (from designing women fame) and quite honestly, I remember being impressed with her performance. Maybe this is why the "monster" version isn't impressing me......seen it before.
