"A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have."

ˇWoo-hoo! Today I signed up for my very first cycling event -- Tour de Corn (warning: noxious-but-fun MIDI) in East Prairie, Missouri. I found out about it through my LBS's website. I've chosen the thirty-mile ride.

What should I bring? Here's my (potential) "carry on" list, thus far: helmet, gloves, sunglasses, GPS tranceiver/watch, cash/ID, dinky digicam & batteries, PowerBar Harvest bar, water bottle on frame, bike lock (haven't bought that yet), spare tube, generic bike tool kit (tire levers, wrenches), and a shop towel. I plan to slather on some sunscreen and Body Glide beforehand and will be attired in the usual wicking running gear plus non-padded bike shorts (sorry, can't bring myself to spend for padded ones...yet.) Granted, I have to find a way to carry all this without resorting to a hot-arse backpack...going to try to buy (budget-consciously)/borrow a bag system in the next few days.

My ride is an El Cheapo Sears "Free Spirt Elite" MTB with aftermarket seat, bar ends and hybrid tires. I'll have a change of clothes, film, more batteries, and my 35mm SLR in my vehicle. Any input would be greatly welcomed. I'm charging off into unknown territory, dont-cha-know.

Get a seat wedge.

helmet, gloves, sunglasses, GPS tranceiver/watch, - All go on your body

spare tube, generic bike tool kit (tire levers, wrenches), cash/ID - Can all fit in a seat wedge

dinky digicam & batteries, PowerBar Harvest bar, shop towel - Can all go in your jersey (they have pockets on the back)

Bike lock? Typically for rides like that I don't worry about bringing along a lock.

To save space on my bike, I take the spare tube out of the box and store it inside an old sock. I put the sock and tube in the seat wedge. The sock keeps many things from damaging the tube and also doubles as a rag to clean with.

This chronic packrat really appreciates the tips, guys. I'm going to price some seat packs tonight, hopefully. I've got a tiny bag in front of my handlebars, too, that can carry a few tools and a wallet. Don't have a cycling jersey yet -- they're ~ $60 around here and I can't spare the dinero right now.

Re: the lock -- I'd like to have one for after the events, more than anything. You're right, I probably won't need it during the ride itself.

Anything I'm leaving out? I forgot to mention that I've just gotten a set of pedals with clips: they rock. I've had clips on two other bikes and was definitely missing them on the MTB (especially after a few good whacks on the shins.) Mr. Green
