So, I open the mail the other day and what do I find but a $75 gift certificate to participating bike shops for the amount of funds I raised for the National MS Society. I was due this (well, actually more $$ but I don't care) but because of a mixup on their end I thought I wasn't getting it. So its sort of a surprise. I don't really need more gear, so what can I put on my bike/change on my bike to make it better. And remember, I am mechanically challenged so whatever you think of I probably haven't thought of.
My bike (2002 Trek 1000) is pretty much factory everything, I haven't changed anything except the pedals which mine currently are some SPD MTB thing...I can list my stuff if you want. Thoughts?
Suggest something to me so I don't blow this on a ridiculous pair of Nike sunglasses I don't need.

Get the Nike sunglasses!!!!
Ok, fine. How about some new jerseys and stuff like that?
Lights?
Spare tubes?
CO2?
Tools?
A book on bicycle repair? (I thought you've hinted towards this before)

Maybe I will get the sunglasses, I'm good on all the rest of that stuff except the book on repair, and we all know I won't read it if I bought one....
I was just wondering if there was something to be upgraded on my bike, what should I do? On my bottom of the line beloved bike its probably not worth my time....

Ummmm New Jersey is a state...and for all I care, she can have it for free.
If you have a problem thinking of something to get, get ME a new helmet.

Since you've got Sora components and the rest of Shimano's line is either 9 or 10 speed, upgrading a drivetrain component isn't going to happen.
You could get new, lighter tires. Or a newer, ligher set of drop bars or a new saddle. How about carbon water bottle cages? A new stem? Seat post?

I remember you telling me that about my drivetrain. I basically want a new bike but thats going to wait 4+ years
And since I could lose 5-10 of my own pounds, I really don't think I need to be too worried about carbon things like seat posts on my bike
Not that they are $75 or less, but what is the deal with Look pedals? Seems like all the 'cool kids' have them?
I think I'll just get those sunglasses and keep being a bike ignoramus

You could buy me pedals and shoes!
Umm... how about just using it for maintenance when the time comes?

That's what I would do except it expires in about 6 weeks.
So how about these?

A new set of cables and having your hubs rebuilt would cost about that much (I think). Newly greased, well-adjusted hubs make the bike feel faster.

For that loot I will sell you my LOOK pedals (barely used, as you know) and my Specialized shoes which are not size 38 after all, but size 40. Retail value = $200! PM me if interested.

go for the shades, totally. im sure that if your eyes are as sun-sensitive as your skin is, then you really shoud invest in some quality eye protection! does that help your case?

I vote for the sunglasses only because I don't know jack sh*t about any of the other stuff.
