i know we do greatest hits here, but what about your fav music at church ?if you go, what do you like to sing/hear at services?
I'm working on the music for Sunday morning and realized that one old gospel hymn will be particularly appropriate for the service. The older members of the congregation will be thrilled that I chose it, but many of our younger members may not know it. Since we're all of a "certain" generation and younger I was wondering what we prefer at worship.

When I went to a different church (more contemporary) we sang a lot of choruses and the like but the church I'm at now, we do much more traditional hymns and I like that better.
What gets me are the older folks in the congregation that can sing every hymn without ever cracking a hymnal.

I love the contemporary service music. The choruses just get me going!
But, I love a hymn thrown in every Sunday. I don't see why both can't be done more often at the same service.

Gothic Chants
Actually I went to two different ethnic churches growing up and we would sing a good deal of songs in either Italian or Croatian depending on which church I went to. During Christmas they would have entire masses in the particular tradition of that church. Also I was in an ethnic performance group (Rolling Rock/Sahara and Keltic might know) called Tamburitzans and we sang at a number of masses as the chorus.
Not too sure how that would work at your church--go with The King of Glory- always a favorite

Airehead, both can be done, I do it all the time.
BamBam, Tamburitzans??? I'm impressed.
PH, those hymns are so much a part of their lives that if you go to a nursing home to visit alzheimers' patients the hymns are the only thing they have left in their memories. My grandmother is that way now. She doesn't even remember my dad, but she has those hymns in her head still.

My favorite personally to sing is Schubert's Ave Maria. I've only done it in weddings, but that counts, right?

I really enjoy the contemporary ones we sing. Also have many traditional favorites. There are a few that always make me cry (Borning Cry, Amazing Grace, for example) because they remind me of loved ones or my own spiritual journey.

I never spent much time in church as a child but as an adult I have found my way back. My favorite is this one.
| Quote: | I Danced in the Morning
Text Only
by Sydney Carter, 1963,
to the American shaker melody, Simple Gifts
Verse 1:
I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun.
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth;
At Bethlehem I had My birth.
CHORUS
Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance said He,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I'll lead you all in the dance, said He.
Verse 2:
I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
but they would not dance and they would not follow Me
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John;
They came with Me and the dance went on.
CHORUS
Verse 3:
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame;
the holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high
And left Me there on a cross to die.
CHORUS
Verse 4:
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black;
It's hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried my body and they thought I'd gone;
But I am the dance and I still go on.
CHORUS
Verse 5:
They Cut Me down and I leap up high;
I am the life that will never, never die.
I'll live in you if you'll live in Me:
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He.
CHORUS

Sahara, Borning cry is Awesome.
runningBrewer! That is an excellent text. I used that song a few weeks ago as we moved out of Christmas and into Epiphany. Another one that does the same thing is O Sing a Song of Bethlehem, moves you from the birth to the resurrection.

I sing in the adult choir at our church which is the more traditional hymns....we have a wonderful folk choir that I enjoy listening to. some of my favorite hymns are:
Be not afraid
Behold the Lamb
We will Rise Again
Lord, you have come
Ubi Caritas
The supper of the Lord
Table of Plenty
sing of the Lord's Goodness
River of Glory
As the Deer Longs
O Sacred Head, Surrounded
Litany of the Saints
Just a closer walk with thee

I want to go to your church. All the places we go do one or the other--only. No compromise. I love the old hymns because of their significance. I love the choruses because they are almost like a rallying call to worship.
Softly and Tenderly
Awesome God
are two of my absolute favorites.

There are a lot of songs I like and just aren't familar with the names. Earlyrunner brought up 2 more favorites
Be not afraid, and a Closer Walk with Thee.
I also love On Eagles Wings. (At least I think that is the name)

I interviewed at several large churches for the music director's position as a full-time job. that was before I got the teaching job. most of them were fighting that battle between contemporary and traditional and none of them were having much success. When I get approached about "Style" of worship I try to redirect the conversation to the purpose of worship. If we pay attention to that, then the style doesn't really matter. And that opens the door for all styles of music to be used for the glory of God.
I work for a small church (about 125 on any sunday) I am the music program at the moment. I spend a lot of time going from the piano to the organ, and vice versa. We do traditional hymns and contemporary choruses. I've found that my congregation is open to all the new things I give them, but I make sure I give them the old stuff with it.

Now that I think about it, we didn't even have hymnals at the more contemporary church.
