I'm finding through my study of yoga how to realign my body and integrate a mind body philosophy that I find extremely helpful not only in my running but also in my overall life. I wanted to share some thoughts on yoga, so others may be inpsired to share their stories about the influence of yoga in their lives or be inspired to integrate a mind body approach to their training and healing.
After a couple years hiatus and initial experiences with Bikram Yoga http://www.bikramyoga.com/yoga.htm
I'm now practicing Anusara Yoga...and I'm in the very, beginning class. http://www.anusara.com/?pagerequested=about_anusara
I am amazed about the effects this is having on my life and body. You know, my class is composed of obese people, a woman who has a back injury, a dude, and me. All of us are learning to use grace, strength, and flexibility to heal injuries, gain strength, and open our hearts. Beyond the Zenish qualities that freak some people out, including some of the class participants...especially during the Om...which I absolutely love...the principles of aligment and learning how to integrate them are incredibly powerful. I was just telling another Riff Raffer about Monday's class and how I actually felt my back lengthen, open and strengthen after learning a new pose. For me, I'm finding the philosophy intrinsic and beautiful, but I know for a lot of people just learnign the postures and perhaps integrating them into their workouts would be worth their time.
I've learned, though, that not all studios are created equally, and that instructors need to be certified and even the certified ones aren't always worth your time and money. Skip the YWCA or YMCA and find a real studio.
Here's a great article for people who are in pain and may be deciding to use yoga as one approach to prevent knots and aches in her/his body.

I recently got into "hot yoga" - which is yoga in an usually warm room. It's like yoga in a sauna. I feel great afterwards and it works up a sweat. I love it...
