Posted: 10/03/03 - 09:29 Post subject: X-mas shopping early or late?
Last weekend I finished up my x-mas shopping and sent off the gift items
(with receipt) to the various family members.
Yes I said I finished my x-mas shopping
With a mother
Step-father
sister
brother
two nephews
a sister-in-law
and a dog
I was able to get gifts that were needed and different from years past.
Yet all is get is grief......
Had a discussion with mom sayung every year she has to wait several months to open the packages and why can't I shop like normal people (at the last minute).
Well if there's one thing I real anal about is x-mas shopping, I hate shopping late, and start as early as July with the planning and like to be done by the end of September.
Now I only have a few people to shop for and I try to find a good gift for all.
Now being single and no children might make x-mas shopping for me a different experience that those with families.
Has it been your notion to shop early or ...................... late??

We start early, and keep buying until right up to the big day.

In previous years, I've always had Christmas shopping for the kids done by now. This year, we're doing it very late. Like mid-December late. I'm just so broke. We also made a rule last year that each kid only gets 3 things, and this makes it very hard on me to figure out what they want the most. Waiting is a good idea since it makes it easier on them to figure out what is most important to them.
We're making family abide by the 3-present thing as well, with the exception of MIL. She will only buy 3 toys, the rest will be clothes and books, movies, video games, etc. Although with her illness, she may not even do Christmas this year, which to be honest suits me just fine. We end up giving so much away right after the holidays because they just cannot use everything they get.

We had the same rule applied in our family as well but some folks felt it was easier to bundle their gifts to me (from brother, nephew & SIL) instead of each buying me a gift.
I got Pi$$ed off about this in the beginning then felt a gift is a gift and stop worrying about it.

Wow Keith, you are on the ball. I'm on the late side, but not Christmas Eve or anything. Last year was the earliest ever because with Hayden's due date being a week before we HAD to get it done early. I think we were done by Thanksgiving. Who knows this year, probably back to the later side of things.

Why not continue buying them early and mail them at the last minute? Don't you ever have the problem where they buy what you got them, and then they have to return your gift? And... you can't ever buy anything that has to be returned within 30 days (electronics, sometimes movies, music, milk, etc.).

I used to get shopping done very late. Nowadays, I give everybody homemade stuff like wine (this year its a Merlot), beer (Assorted pale ales, stouts, and a cinnamon-nutmeg ale I brew for every Xmas), pickles, and bread. I may even try to make some cheese this year.
I have to start getting everything made months in advance if I want to have them ready for the holidays.

I always did it late - real late - and my wife likes to do that early. She won out because to send stuff early Nebraska is better than visiting Nebraska with gifts in hand.

Geez...I ordered one thing for my Mom last week for Christmas and was so proud of myself. Now I feel like a complete failure.
I'm definitely a procrastinator. So bad, that most of the time our family Christmas is New Years weekend, so I wait til after Christmas for the family stuff.

So, how does one get on your Christmas list? That cinnamon-nutmeg ale sounds very interesting! I love cheese as well.
