Posted: 01/26/03 - 10:30 Post subject: Wrestling coach update!
Maybe you remember, maybe you don't. My oldest kid ended up quitting his high school wrestling team after the coach began pushing to drop to an unhealthy and for him, an unattainable weight (125 lbs for a kid who's about 11% body fat at 147 lbs). The reason he quit wasn't the weight thing so much as the belittlement from the coach for not being a team player, not wanting to win bad enough, etc. My son ended up going back to the team after about 1.5 weeks because he missed it and he went back knowing full well he was going to be a practice wrestler more than anything. The coach was still a jerk but Chris accepted it and ignored it. Great news occurred Friday..... The coach was fired! Apparently in his quest to field a state ranked team and the undue pressure he's been putting on these kids he riled up some more parents who carry more clout than I. The AD and the principle fired his ass and the team has been taken over by one of the assistants. The kids are ecstatic and suddenly wrestling seems fun again.

Sounds like the coach dug his own grave. Very good news for your son!

That is great to hear! Our kindergarten son who is taking wrestling this year loves it, but I can't help thinking I hope it's not something he wants to continue. Your story keeps coming back to me.
People keep telling me "oh, wrestling isn't like that anymore, they are more careful about the weight thing, etc." And I tell them, "no, I know someone (well, okay, I don't really know him, we've never actually met, but that is another story) who's son went through this" People are quite disgusted with the coach when I tell them the story.
Glad to hear things worked out for him.

That's great, Rob!! Not just from a wrestling is fun again perspective, but truly, there are more dudes with eating disorders caused by just this kind of thing than you'd think. Football players, wrestlers, sprinters, anyone having to "make weight" to be competitive in their sport.....I knew a couple personally in high school and I hear the one guy is still as an adult having major issues with it.
As a past and future counselor, this pisses me off more than you can imagine because men and boys are so much less likely to seek treatment because it's viewed as a "girly disease" which it most certainly is NOT. I'm glad to see this jackarse got out of there before hurting any more kids!!!!

That is great to hear. The coach needed to be fired. Glad your son is back at it again. Hopefully the new coach will be a better one.

Some coaches I guess live their fantasies through their athletes. I wonder if some other school will pick him up.

He was fired due to a conflict of interest with another wrestler, hehe.
