Posted: 11/03/02 - 22:05 Post subject: Wow, what an experience
I had a great time. Although I did not break my 4 hour goal (4:10:23) It was still really amazing!
We got into Staten Island at about 8:30, it was freaking freazing! The lines for bagels, fruit and coffee were huge, so I jusy ate my GU and drank water (I had had my wheaties before I left the house). I hugged the NBC news van for warmth until we had to get to our corrals (around 10:45). The race started, it took almost 7 minutes to reach the starting line. Once I got there, we were packed like sardines, After running my first three miles at 11 minutes each, I figured the 4 hour goal was slipping fast (I don't think NYC is the place for personal bests, it's way too cowded!) Brooklyn (the second borough) was just amazing! As you passed through each neighborhood (which were packed with people), you got a glimpse of the different ethnicities. From Italian, to Mexican, Hispanic, Hassidic, African-American, polish, Irish. Everyone was so supportive. Someone gave me the idea to put my name on my shirt, which I did, and everyone was cheering for me
The race really didn't open up until Manhattan. But WOW, Manhattan was just Amazing! Wall to wall people. All the bars had Marathon partys, and you could smell the beer, (it smelled really good). Live music, clowns, and just wacky people made it really interesting. I passed my wife, brother and cousin at about mile 17, (stopped to kiss my wife, naturally). My brother took this picture of me, unfortunately, it is of my backside:
They said I look surprisingly well (I think I smiled for the whole 26.2 miles) mile 20 passed, and I thought all I need to break 4 hours is a 52 minute 10K Wasn't gonna happen. We ran up and I mean up to the Bronx home at last I thought. than mile 23 came, I passed this guy:
So this is what the wall feels like. I just couldn't get myself to run faster! I never stopped, but I slowed considerably, I passed the mile 24 marker, than 25 marker, than the one mile to go marker. That had to be the LONGEST mile ever. Finally I finished, got my finisher medal, didn't pass out, had to walk a freaking 5K. Looked for my family, couldn't find them, attempted to catch the bus which had my warm clothes (Did I tell you the bus was supposed to be 10 blocks away?). Couldn't find the bus. At this point, I was a pitiful picture. I am freezing my yams off, shivering, limping, all the while wrapped in reynolds wrap. I think someone threw a quarter at me. I decide to go back to the finish (did I mention 10 blocks?) Finally found my brother. Limped about 2 miles to his car (2 miles!). Had to go to the bus depot to get my stuff. Came home,
kissed my kids, sat at my computer.
Running a Marathon is kinda like drinking too much. The next day (or few hours), you swear you will never do it again.
I know I will.

Great report Monk! Sounds like a great race...now I wish I had chosen NY over MCM! Know what you mean about swearing it off. Hope the post race walk wasn't too much--that sounds like the hardest part of the race.
Congrats on a job well done! You da' man...get this guy a special dude card.

Way to go buddy, I'm proud of ya!!! I tried to catch up with you on Yahoo but I'll check in with you later. Savor the victory, you earned it!!
Isn't that little incline in Central Park a beeyotch?? Cruel joke to put that at the end. I've run in CP before and that little sucker always gets me. I can't imagine doing it at the end of a marathon.

We are soooo proud of you!!!!!!!
BTW...loved the part about the reynolds wrap, nothing better than seeing thousands of people wrapped up in what looks like aluminum foil, lol!! And I don't know about you but that stuff doesn't do a darn thing to keep me warm!
