brake usage

Another good reason not to utilize this service. I don't need a box to tell me braking on a dime is bad. My mechanic who annually replaces my brakes does that instead.

Why go through the hassle of making someone install the box?

I should just volunteer to hand my money over to them.

I think a lot of you missed something important:

If your car was built in the last 5 years or so the box is already in your car. You're just letting the company have access to the data that is in the in the box already.

Well, in that case....

It would be easier just to give them access to my bank account, instead of the black box. Razz

Confused

what's that box recording anyway, just your speed -- or your conversations

Just like the flight data recorder in a plane: Speed, distances traveled, braking, hours of use, time, date. Correlating the speed, distance traveled and brake usage would give anyone a good idea what your driving habits are like

oh, then i'd go for it. as long as they aren't listening to my terms of endearment directed at other drivers... Wink

What have you (generally speaking, not you specifically) got to hide? Does it have a sensor for a body in the trunk or something?

It's not a particular piece of information that anyone has to hide.
1. If there is an option, I simply choose privacy for me.

2. I've mentioned before that I tend to speed and stay with traffic. I don't hide that fact from the cars around me even if one happens to belong to a police officer. I don't care to document my driving habits for the benefit of a third party.

3. Information that a black box would not be all-inclusive to understand the existing conditions of a given car outing. Limited information including driving patterns can be damning.

I just don't trust it, though with a 2001 i may have it if andydp is right. Who determines if my braking is excessive or that a lane change was too abrupt? Does the box determine if i'm going 5 over in a 30 mph zone or if i'm 5 under in a 40mph zone?

You've never ridden with my dad, Mr "I may only be 64 but I can convince you I'm 94 with my 10 mph under driving"

My insurance would be ridiculously high. That and I just attract morons on the road, so it would look even worse than what it is. Example: I'm going 75 on a 3 lane interstate. I'm in the middle lane. Truck in left lane going 60 cuts right in front of me when THERE'S NO ONE ELSE ON THE ROAD. I've had witnesses ride with me, they agree that I attract complete idiots.

the box only records the last 5 seconds of data for an accident. It is only used in the most serious accidents. It records speed, braking and other controls, etc.

If radar guns used by the po-po are unreliable* how do we know this technology will be?

* Let the record show I said the trouble was with the equipment, not the people operating it.
