In the local paper today (sorry, can't find the article online) there's a story about a test program that an auto insurance company is running. They basically install a "black box" on your car and every now and then you turn over the recorded data to them. If the data shows that you're a good driver, you get a break on the cost of your insurance. If you speed excessively or frequently brake too fast, your premiums go up.
Would you sign up for that program if your insurance company offered it?

Just so you know...
Many car rental companies already do that and will charge you lots and lots of extra $$ if you exceed the speed limits in their car.
The "black box" you mention, is already in many new cars and is used by police agencies to help reconstruct accidents. It has been documented some insurance companies are reading the boxes when they do the repair estimates.

My car insurance is high enough, so no thanks. Don't need a little box to tell me I regularly speed. I'm already aware of that.

Yeah I probably would go for it. After a while I would probably forget about it anyway.

I resist Big Brother despite that fact that it's useless to try.

If you find a good downhill and a stiff tail wind, you can probably break the speed limit. Try not to doze off when you're going so fast though.

What have you (generally speaking, not you specifically) got to hide? Does it have a sensor for a body in the trunk or something?

Why go through the hassle of making someone install the box?
I should just volunteer to hand my money over to them.

I think a lot of you missed something important:
If your car was built in the last 5 years or so the box is already in your car. You're just letting the company have access to the data that is in the in the box already.

Just like the flight data recorder in a plane: Speed, distances traveled, braking, hours of use, time, date. Correlating the speed, distance traveled and brake usage would give anyone a good idea what your driving habits are like
